The concert that will take place in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau on May 9 was organized by the Embassy of Russia with a hidden purpose, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said in a news conference.

“The statement about the organization of the concert was submitted by Unibank. Only on April 30, we received an application from the Russian Embassy, asking limiting access to the Great National Assembly Square on the occasion of the celebration of 68 years of the Victory Day. The Embassy became involved much later. They probably hide something if they did so,” said the mayor.

He reminded about the December 5, 2012 decision that was signed by 11 heads of state and government of the CIS, including the Government of Moldova. Under it, May 9 was declared a holy day for all the signatory countries. “If Dmitri Rogozin (Deputy Prime Minister, the special representative of the Russian Federation for Transnistria) comes to Chisinau tomorrow, May 9, it will be evident that all the developments form part of the decision signed last December. It’s impossible for a Deputy Prime Minister known for his xenophobe attitude and who instigates interethnic hatred to come to Chisinau,” said Dorin Chirtoaca.

He reiterated that the Chisinau City Hall cannot ban or allow holding events. Under the legislation, the local authorities are informed about their organization. The City Hall can become involved only if several entities announce their separate intentions to stage events simultaneously in the same place. In such cases, priority is given to those who submitted the notification to the City Hall the first.

Europe Day that is celebrated worldwide on May 9 is marked later in Chisinau. According to the mayor, the date was changed at the request of the EU Delegation so as not to stir things up. From next year, Europe Day will be celebrated on May 9 in the Greta National Assembly Square, while the Victory Day at the World War II memorial “Eternity”.
