A citizen of Russia living in Comrat was arrested for attempting to bribe an officer of the National Investigations Inspectorate. He offered 80,000 lei to the officer for this to hush up a case of cigarettes smuggling, IPN has learned from the National Anticorruption Center.
According to the denouncer, the man aged 41 asked him to return the 25,000 packs of cigarettes seized by the police, to the value of about 300,000 lei. The cigarettes were confiscated because they were transported in the absence of documents or origin and excise stamps.
The arrest was made in the office of the policeman on August 5. The suspect was caught in the act of transmitting the money. He was placed under arrest for 72 hours. He faces three to seven years in jail and a fine of 80,00 0 to 120,000 lei for passive corruption.
