The man from Leova, who beat his daughter to death, was sentenced to 10 years in closed-type penitentiary. The sentence was passed by the district court, IPN reports.

The case happened on January 26. According to a communiqué from the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), the man, being under the influence of alcohol, hit his five-year-old daughter several times. The girl was rushed to the hospital in a coma, after lying on the floor for several hours. She died several days later without regaining consciousness.

The prosecutors consider the sentence is too mild and intend to appeal it to a higher court.

The statistics of the PGO show that 581 criminal cases over domestic violence were started in the first half of this year. In the period, there were issued 223 protection orders for victims of domestic violence. Of the total number of criminal cases started, 341 were sent to court.
