The executive director of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” Igor Munteanu, in an interview for the Foreign Policy Association, explains why increased interest is devoted to the Transnistrian issue in an electoral year on both sides of the Nistru River, IPN reports.
Igor Munteanu said the regional context changed a lot and particular factors for the transformation of the conflict appeared meanwhile: the war in Ukraine and the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU. “It is evident that the Transnistrian businesses are attracted by the European market, but their wish of integration is blocked by the militarist and client regime of Russia, which wants to freeze the status-quo of this separatism either by intimidation or by fantasist promises that still attract the misinformed public,” he stated.
According to the director of “Viitorul”, nobody should recommend us not to observe our own laws. The Constitution clearly stipulates that the Republic of Moldova is a sovereign and independent, unitary and undividable state. On the other hand, they discreetly insist on the fact that the official Chisinau should review its legal framework, including the Constitution, and should abrogate the Law on the Special Status of the Transnistrian Region of 2005.
Igor Munteanu believes some of the foreign officials pretend not to understand the essence of the settlement process, which is to eliminate the sources of conflict and reintegrate the Transnistrian region into the sovereign and undividable state Moldova. From this perspective, the interests of the Republic of Moldova go against the goals pursued by the Russian officials and are distinct from the pieces of advice given by some of the European diplomats.
Russia does not hide that it aims to obtain the separation of Moldova from the EU and the abolition of the Association Agreement, using the Transnistrian regime as a ‘ram’ for building a client regime based on its own interests, confederative or federative of dual type. Thus, the political-genetic phantasies can also affect the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, stated “Viitorul” director.
