Former deportees and political detainees urge MPs to give vote of confidence to Filat

The Council of the Association of Former Deportees and Political Detainees welcomes the decision of President Nicolae Timofti to designate the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat as a candidate for premiership. In a news conference on April 18, the former deportees called on the MPs to give a vote of confidence to the nominated candidate and to avoid early elections, IPN reports.

“We call upon every lawmaker, from the factions and the unaffiliated ones, to support the Filat Government. If they consider themselves patriots, they will vote for the leader of the PLDM,” said the head of the Association of Former Deportees and Political Detainees Valentina Sturza.

According to her, Moldova must detach itself from communism because the previous generations had unpleasant experiences. “We witnessed the Communist genocide and thus do not want the Communist Party to return to power. In the eight years while in power, they caused only disaster and poverty. In 2009, the Government led by Filat took over a destroyed country and worked hard to take it out of the ruin. The Communists obtained what they wanted – they destroyed the Alliance for European Integration,” stated Valentina Sturza.

She also said that the AEI supported morally and financially the former detainees and deportees and accompanied them in the commemoration events, while the Communist Party never listened to their requests.

Association member Victor Ghilas shared this opinion. “Filat has his sins, but we should not forget that he did good things too. There were floods on the Prut. Filat, together with Lanca and his allies, sent help. When floods happened 4-5 years ago, Vladimir Voronin traveled abroad together with his wife,” he stated.

The members of the Association said that if Vlad Filat is not voted in, the former deportees and political detainees will demand organizing the Great National Assembly and excluding the elections based on party lists. “There should be direct elections and parliamentary immunity should be given only to the party leaders, not all the members,” said Victor Ghilas.
