A family in Nicoreni village, Drochia district, was left homeless after a fire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon, December 10, burnt their home to ashes. The 8 year old girl who was in the house at that moment is now in hospital.
The child had returned from school and was doing her homework. When she saw smoke she called her mother. Because she was scared, the girl stayed in the house for some time and got poisoned with smoke.
According to the initial version, the fire started from a short circuit.
Mihail Rotaras, mayor of the village, told IPN that the family also has a younger child and that the couple had worked for 10 years to build the house and lost everything in a moment. The house cannot be repaired. The mayor said that authorities will try to help the family through a fund-raising campaign.
Liliana Puscasu, press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergency Service, told IPN that in 2014, there have been 1796 fires in Moldova, killing 123 people. Beginning on Friday, December 12, firefighters will begin a door-to-door campaign to tell people about fire hazards and measures to prevent fires.
