Representatives of civil society organizations, including of trade unions and employers, could soon meet at a forum where the representatives of the state authorities will provide information about the process of implementing the commitments assumed on the path of European integration, secretary of the National NGO Council of Moldova Antonita Fonari said in public debates staged at IPN on June 30.

Antonita Fonari noted that in the forum, civil society will try together with the Government and Parliament to determine how the tasks and commitments assumed in the European integration process are fulfilled. “We want the authorities to come and tell us at what stage the process is and what each ministry apart does. For example, the Ministry of the Environment must tell us about the 40 documents that must be adjusted, etc.” she stated.

According to the Council’s secretary, this event will help draw a clear picture of what each state institution did and what it did not. There will also be adopted a resolution that will specify how civil society, the trade unions, employers and the ordinary people can become involved. The forum will also involve representatives of the local authorities. “We understand that we cannot reach Europe or any other place if we do not engage the villages and communities,” stated Antonita Fonari.

Speaking about the adjustment of the national legal framework to the European one, Iuliana Cantaragiu, expert of the National Environment Center and a member of the Council, said that a series of laws had been adopted, but the implementation process is not ensured. The state institutions should be functional and should apply mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the legislation. In the European states, the environment policies are high on the list of priorities, not yet in Moldova. This shows authorities’ attitude to the environment-related problems.

The public debates “What do we assume when we say we want a European country/capital” were organized with the support of the American people, provided through the US Agency for International Development.
