Drug use is expanding in Moldova, Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health said the illicit trafficking and use of drugs represent a major public health problem in Moldova, which contributes to higher morbidity and mortality. The number of persons taking drugs, who are under medical supervision, has increased in Moldova, IPN reports, quoting a communique of the Ministry.

According to the National Narcological Inspectorate, the number of drug users on June 1, 2015 was 10 699 or 300.8 per 100 000 people (284.6 per 100 000 in 2014). These include 57 teens younger than 18. About 95% of the persons who take drugs out of curiosity or because they want to experience something new are people under 30.

The expansion of drug use in Moldova made the state authorities adopt policies and programs to combat drug taking and trafficking and a series of legislative measures and activities to prevent drug use and counteract drug distribution. The Government recently approved a decision to amend and extend tables and lists of psychotropic substances, under which the circulation of 26 new active substances used for medical purposes will be supervised and controlled.

Within the National Narcological Inspectorate, about 70% of the registered persons are annually engaged in information, education, prophylaxis and treatment programs aimed at facilitating the rehabilitation and social integration of drug addicts.

On June 26, it is observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
