Doctor of Oncological Institute arrested for taking bribe

An urologist of the Chisinau Oncological Institute was arrested on February 13 on suspicion of taking bribe. He allegedly asked 7 000 lei from a person for this to be operated, IPN reports.

According to the National Anticorruption Center, the doctor asked money for hospitalizing the patient and making sure that he is immediately operated. When the person was to be discharged, the doctor insisted on paying the money for surgery and for being issued with documents confirming that this was operated and needed further medical treatment.

As the person didn’t have all the money, this gave the doctor 2 000 lei. The doctor warned him that he will fulfill his promise to prescribe treatment and to monitor his state of health only when this gives the rest of the money.

The National Anticorruption Center took legal action over passive corruption. The doctor faces a jail term and ban on practicing for a period of up to ten years.
