Depression is one of main causes of disease and disability among youths

In Moldova, depression is one of the main causes of disease and disability among young people, while suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents aged between 15 and 19. The data were presented by the National Public Health Agency in connection with World Mental Health Day that is observed on October 10, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Agency says the abuse of alcohol and drugs leads to the appearance of mental disorders and risky behaviors, such as unprotected sex and dangerous driving. The eating disorders among youths generate concerns, while the non-observance of mental health conditions in adolescence leads to serious consequences in adulthood.

In the Republic of Moldova, the incidence of mental and behavioral disorders in teens younger than 17 in 2017 was 15.9 cases per 10,000 people. Even if half of all the mental disorders appear at around 14, most of these are not detected and treated on time and this is a reason for concern.

According to the National Public Health Agency, World Mental Health Day is observed to underline the importance of diversifying the care services intended for young people, including services to facilitate the overcoming of the faced problems. Specialists say prevention and early intervention measures are also needed. The used online technologies increase the young people’s vulnerability to stress and mental disorders and exert additional pressure on youths.
