Immediately after the Venice Commission’s appraisal of the bill to change the electoral system is provided, the Democratic Party (PDM) will analyze it and will start work on the draft law so as to make the necessary changes. In a press briefing, the leader of the PDM Vlad Plahotniuc said the Commission’s appraisal will be treated with due seriousness, openness and interest, IPN reports.
The Democratic leader said they speculated a lot on the issue during the last few days. They say it is about an endorsement, but it is actually about a series of recommendations on the PDM’s proposal that was submitted to the Venice Commission for appraisal. “We will analyze it with openness and interest. We ourselves transmitted the bill on the electoral system change to the Venice Commission namely because we want to have this technical-legal appraisal so that the proposal is in accordance with the international election standards,” he stated.
According to Vlad Plahotniuc, the fact that the parliamentary opposition and several NGOs, which show their political affiliation, struggle against the Moldovans’ right to choose directly the MPs is regrettable. “We respect their right to have another opinion and to demonstrate as they want, but we cannot accept these small groups to take the term of civil society hostage and to claim that they represent all the Moldovans,” he said.
The politician noted that the people have waited for the change in the electoral system for so many years not accidentally. The people want to know what persons they delegate to sit in Parliament. “We will further promote the bill on the electoral system change, but will surely work hard for this change to be made in accordance with the best international practices in the field,” stated the Democratic leader.
The Venice Commission is to pronounce on the bill to change the electoral system later this week. President Igor Dodon earlier said the Venice Commission’s recommendations will be taken into account, but they will insist on the switchover to the mixed-member electoral system.
