The municipality asked immediately amending the law that limits the powers of the police in combating street trading. The request was made by Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, IPN reports.
In the April 22 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, the mayor said that he would like to know who wants to transform Chisinau into a market. In order to avoid such a situation, the law should be amended as it now limits the powers of the municipal police. According to Dorin Chirtoaca, the police officers must be able to compile reports and confiscate the merchandise sold in the street. The fines imposed on street vendors should be increased. In this connection, the mayor asked creating more workplaces so that the farmers are able to sell fruit and vegetables in the agricultural market situated on Carbunarilor St.
Veaceslav Balan, acting director of the Central Market, said that the vendors invaded the streets around the market last weekend. They sold both agricultural products and clothes there even if free places were available inside the market. No state authority intervened to combat street trading.
Chisinau Police Division deity chief Silviu Musuc said the number of policemen who patrol the perimeter of the market will be doubled, but they cannot impose fines or confiscate the goods. They will be able only to inform the Consumer Protection Agency.
