Cemeteries in Chisinau to be closed on Sunday of the Dead

The cemeteries situated in the municipality of Chisinau will be closed on June 6, 7 and 8, when the Sunday of the Dead is to be celebrated, as the municipal Extraordinary Commission for Public Health decided in the morning of June 6, IPN reports.

“This is a correct decision as the number of infections with the novel coronavirus goes up,” stated mayor general Ion Ceban, who heads the Commission.

There are about 280,000 graves in Saint Lazarus Cemetery alone. If by at least one person comes to each grave, the risk is that this will become a large hotbed. Furthermore, if those attending give presents according to Orthodox tradition, the risk grows further, Ion Ceban explained.

“Currently, even if the doctors and the medical institutions are equipped, the five strategic municipal hospitals have only 191 available beds,” stated the mayor.

He called on the townspeople to remain at home as this is the most appropriate decision in the current situation.
