Carol Schmidt’s house may become a museum

Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca instructed his colleagues to find out how the house where Mayor Carol Schmidt lived can be bought. The municipality aims to restore the building and to transform it into a museum or a conference center, IPN reports.

The mayor said he discussed the restoration of the historical monument with German Ambassador to Moldova Matthias Meyer. “We agreed to implement a project to commemorate Carol Schmidt. He proposed making a bust of the former mayor. It’s not excluded that he will support us financially,” the mayor said in the ordinary meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials.

The house where Carol Schmidt lived is situated at the intersection of the streets Varlaam and Mihai Eminescu. A corner of the roof must be repaired, while a part of the outside walls need to be plastered.

Carol Schmidt, a Bessarabian German who was born in Balti, had been mayor of Chisinau in 1877-1903.
