Broadcasting regulator concerned about possibility of censorship in Gagauz audiovisual media

The Broadcasting Coordination Council warns the authorities and the rule of law bodies about an initiative to amend and supplement the Broadcasting Law of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, which contains provisions that undermine the bases of statehood and legal order in Moldova, IPN reports.

The bill is aimed at instituting censorship on the audiovisual mass media in the region and at substituting the licensing, surveillance and inspection powers of the central public authorities and the state bodies, in breach of Moldova’s legislation.

According to the Council, the bill lays down new legal norms and a procedure that runs counter to the Moldovan laws and the international acts to which Moldova is a party. This is the procedure for choosing and naming new members of the Supervisory Board of the Regional Public Broadcaster “Gagauziya Radio Televizionu”.

A similar attempt was made in 2014, when the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia adopted amendments to the Broadcasting Law of Gagauzia, but those changes were annulled by a decision of the Comrat Court.
