Austrian NGO to come to Chisinau help authorities in solving stray dogs problems
A non-governmental organization from Austria will come to Chisinau to help the capital's administration solve the problem of the stray dogs. Health direction chief Mihai Moldovanu told the City Hall's staff meeting Monday that representatives of the NGO will daily sterilize 40-50 dogs. During their 2 months of staying in Chisinau, the Austrians plan to sterilize as many as 3,000 dogs, both male and female, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Animal protecting foundation Vier Pfoten has a big experience in cities from Bulgaria, Romania, Italy”. The NGO commits to sterilize, get rid of parasites, să vaccinate and register vagrant dogs from Chisinau, Moldovanu said.
All the expenses will be incurred by the NGO, as the city hall having but to feed and accommodates the personnel involved in the project and help them operate their mobile clinic.
Mihai Moldovanu says they identified an area on Carbunarilor street. The city hall's divisions in charge will draft a decision for the Municipal Council to create a service to sterilize dogs, about the Autosalubritate Cleaning Enterprise.
Head of foreign relations division Gabriela Ciumac told the sitting the Austrian foundation might come half a year later, if necessary.
Ion Cebotari, the deputy head of the Preventive Medicine Center of Chisinau, says the sterilization is not a solution, and the procedure is costly. He referred to polls according to which the people and scientists from eastern countries want the dogs annihilated in a civilized manner. In addition he says Chisinau has become full of rats since the dogs destroyed the cats. He refuted the authorities choice of the area for the clinic arguing there are risks of bird flu, since a bird market was near.
Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca has said he doubts the Chisinau residents will agree kill the dogs, but voiced for consulting the people.
Earlier the Chisinau authorities allocated over 300,000 lei to sterilize some 1,000 stray dogs in a pilot project. According to the Chisinau local administration, there are some 30,000 vagrant dogs in the city, while animal defenders claim the number is twice smaller.
