The People’s Movement “Antimafie” expressed its support for the Liberal Party (PL), encouraging it to act in the opposition and to support a minority government in exchange for the reform of the justice sector. In a news conference at IPN on January 23, the Movement’s head Sergiu Mocanu said the Liberals should not give way to the political pressure exerted by some of the politicians and by members of civil society.
Sergiu Mocanu also said that the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) and the Democratic Party (PDM), which consider themselves European parties, by their irresponsible policies, dictated by clan interests, show that they are ready to renounce the European course in exchange for full control over justice and the law enforcement bodies. In order to manipulate the general public, the two parties invoke the exaggerated pretentions of the Liberals for governmental posts and not the real motive of the PL’s legitimate demand to do the justice reform.
“In this political context, we, the People’s Movement “Antimafie”- the political organization that constantly struggled to eliminate the mafia in Moldova – offer our support for the PL’s political demand to reform the judicial system that is now under full political control,” stated Sergiu Mocanu.
The Movement calls on the PL to renounce the governmental posts and to demand doing the justice reform and appointing a foreign citizen, selected in concert with the European partners, as Moldova’s prosecutor general. According to “Antimafie”, a number of institutions, such as the Broadcasting Coordination Council, the Central Election Commission, the Audit Office and the National Integrity Commission, must be controlled by the PL. “We demand that the Liberal Party should support a minority government formed by the PLDM and PDM only on condition that the justice sector and the law enforcement bodies are reformed,” said Sergiu Mocanu.
He also said that the Liberal leader is now subject to pressure. “It would be a pity if Mister Ghimpu yielded to the pressure exerted by Plahotniuc, Filat and the whole civil society,” he noted.
The call made public at the news conference is to be transmitted today, January 23, to the Liberal Party.
