The suspended mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca will be charged in a new criminal case. This was to happen on September 6, but Chirtoaca presented himself at the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office in the absence of lawyers.
Dorin Chirtoaca told journalists that he does not yet know what accusations will be made against him, but he will find out the coming days. He considers the starting of a new case confirms the fact that the previous case is “empty” and this was initiated for other reasons than the legal ones. He noted that attempts are now being made to find illegalities in any field, but he didn’t break the law.
Contacted by IPN, prosecutor Dumitru Robu said that on September 6 Dorin Chirtoaca was summoned to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office together with the lawyer for being charged, but this could not be done because the mayor came alone.
According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, in 1998 – 2013 the courts of law issued 383 decisions by which the Chisinau Municipal Council was obliged to provide dwellings in the municipal housing sector to particular persons and their families. In 2012 – January 2017, the Chisinau City Hall, represented by the mayor general, by prior arrangement with the sides, identified a method of coming to terms with persons who presented court decisions by which the CMC was obliged to provide them with homes.
The mayor, concluding 81 conciliation transactions and paying a total of 66 million lei from the municipal budget, caused considerable damage to the local public administration. It was established that the City Hall didn’t ensure the transparent implementation of court decisions according to the “first come – first served” principle and distributed dwellings selectively, preferentially and unsystematically.
Dorin Chirtoaca was arrested on May 25 on charges of passive corruption and influence peddling in the case of pay parking lots. In two days he was placed under house arrest. The case was set to court on July 21. The suspended mayor pleads not guilty.
