Unionism similar to patriotism... IPN Experts

In a news conference held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Liberal Party (PL), the party’s first deputy chairman Dorin Chirtoacă said it won’t be prosperous life in the Republic of Moldova as long as the union is not made. If we want to get rid of dictatorship and overcome the situation in which the Republic of Moldova and its citizens found themselves, we should follow the path to the union. Also, to underline the scale and length of the effort, Dorin Chirtoacă reminded that the PL was created two years after Moldova declared its independence and this set the goal of reunifying the divided Great Romania.

Dorin Chirtoacă’s assertions permanently attracted public attention as in 2007 he became, metaphorically speaking, an icon of the hopes of hundreds of thousands of Moldovans who really started to believe in the chance of democratization, the rapprochement with Romania and the European integration. Currently, given that he is being investigated by the law enforcement bodies, Dorin Chirtoacă’s statements continue to attract public attention, but rather out of curiosity. Regrettably, Dorin Chirtoacă disappoints again, this time by distorting a verifiable truth. And this is serious as he further dissipates the remaining confidence he enjoy.

Who can explain why did Dorin Chirtoacă need to assert that: the PL was created two years after Moldova declared its independence and this set the goal of reunifying the divided Great Romania? As it is enough to look at the program of the Reform Party (PR), whose successor the PL became in 1999, and we will see that the PR had never had such a goal. We can go to the Ministry of Justice and can find the PR’s file on a shelf there. In the party’s program adopted in the first congress on September 5, 1993, we will discover its real essence, namely that the PR is the promotor of the observance of the international law principles and pleads for the irreversible integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European and global community and firmly opposes any treaties and conventions that can endanger the country’s sovereignty”. It should be noted that this fundamental document on the constitution of the PR mentions Romania not even once. The National Renaissance is not mentioned either. Nothing is said about the union or reunification of the divided Great Romania.

Surely, we can admit that the goal of the reunification of the divided Great Romania was a hidden one then. But what is the price of such a well-camouflaged goal that is now revealed? Today we have already ten parties that declare themselves unionist. Most of these sincerely join unionism and do not claim to be precursors as it is easy to see that only one of the ten parties openly declared it was a unionist one and this happened when the police didn’t allow something like this. And this party even confronted the Communist government in 2007 – 2009 so as to have the unionist clause stipulated in its statutes and program. This is the National Liberal Party (PNL) that, alongside the European Action Movement (MAR), in the parliamentary election campaign of March 2009 launched the Soroca Manifesto by which it invited the parties that consider themselves “reformist and national” to openly embrace the Romanian ideal. Actually, the same PNL now very delicately tries to gather together these unionist parties.

Let’s admit that Dorin Chirtoacă, when the PR was constituted, could not have a profound understanding of what the given party was, what objectives it set and how these could be achieved as he was a minor then. But we can see how Dorin Chirtoacă’s views on unionism evolved and what prospects the given desideratum has. The declaring by President Traian Băsescu, on November 27, 2013, of the new country objective – Bessarabia’s union with Romania – was an appropriate occasion. In that context, Dorin Chirtoacă, on December 3, 2013, took part in the talk-show “Between good and evil” on TVR1, where he declared: “After everything we witnessed during the last 2000 years, the reunification should be the fundamental objective of the Romanian nation in the 21st century as there are no obstacles any longer”. The question here is – if there were no obstacles, why had the union desideratum be projected up to the end of the 21st century?  Is this the cause why the PL does not take part in the events, marches and assemblies staged by the unionists parties that still hope the union can be made in the Centenary Year or in a not too distant future?

Evidently, answers to these questions can be given only by Dorin Chirtoacă himself. Maybe he believes that four more generations of Moldovans-Romanians need to be educated in the Romanian spirit to make sure that the union is achievable? If so, the work to educate by correct informing should be started right now. First of all, the Liberal Party should make some clarifications that would confirm somehow the statements made by the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu in the same news conference – “The PL was the first party that included the “union” in its statutes. Time has come for all the parties that promote this ideal to join the PL in its efforts.” Can the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu really indicate very precisely the article and paragraph of the PL’s statutes saying that the party’s objective is indeed the union? Or the union is camouflaged in Article 9 (b) – realization of sovereignty, independence, integrity and national unity? Secondly, as a goal defined in the statutes is a strategic goal, the tactics aimed at achieving this should be stipulated in the party’s political program. We know from our great forerunners that the strategy without a tactic is an illusion, while the tactic without a strategy is blind.

If this is so, it seems to be clear why another four generations should wait until the PL adjusts its strategy and tactic for achieving the union desideratum. That’s why if the premonition of Dorin Chirtoacă – it won’t be prosperous life in the Republic of Moldova as long as the union is not made - is true, we should understand that life will not be prosperous until the end of the 21st century. Bright prospects...
