Igor Botan: Government wasn’t mandated to do so-called reforms in 2014 elections

The current government wasn’t mandated to do the so-called reforms that it promotes now in the elections of November 30, 2014. What it does now is only an attempt to adjust itself to particular challenges on the way, expert Igor Botan said in a public debate entitled “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years”, which was organized by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

According to the IPN project’s standing expert, the current government tries to cope with challenges that appear meanwhile and to convince the people that these are reforms. “I, as a citizen, am not satisfied with what is going on,” he stated.

In another development, Igor Botan said the people must give up labeling the parties as ‘of the right’ and ‘of the left’ as this is irrelevant in the case of Moldova. “We are a so-called imitative democracy. We are in a regional context and must deal with the real problems faced by the country and give up labeling. We must see if the political parties meet the needs of the people,” he stated.

The expert also said that the current government keeps floating and the people must admit that it is able to do this. “When we speak about phenomena, we must specify what phenomenon we referred to. For example, I think that what is going on in Moldova is related to the name of the mister coordinator of the government, who substitutes the sovereignty of the people and this bothers me,” said Igor Botan.

In this connection, he noted that the transformation of the ‘puppeteer’ into ’coordinator’ was an important event of 2016 because the first pulls the strings from behind the curtain, while the second is the one who goes up the stage and admits that he does this.

According to the expert, there are political phenomena that seriously affected the life of the people in Moldova. The signing of a secret agreement to distribute and politicize law enforcement agencies was such an event and the leaders of the parties that did this - PLDM, PDM and PL – are equally to blame for this.

The public debate “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years” was the 67th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN with the assistance of Germany’s Hanns Seidel Foundation.
