The year 2016 was unfavorable for the people because they were every time deceived and told to stay calm as all kinds of advisers and, surely, the ‘coordinator’ think instead of them. This is surely not done without the consent of the other ruling parties. Society became more divided, especially after the election campaign, and lacks confidence in state institutions, Igor Grosu, secretary general of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS), stated in a public debate entitled “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years”, which was organized by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.
Igor Grosu noted that 2016 was marked by protests, at least in the first half, and the society’s attitude to the government and governance – at night, in secret, spontaneously and in the absence of public debates – was thus felt. The creation of two political offers – PAS and the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” - was a response to those protests. The Constitutional Court’s decision to restore the people’s right to choose the Head of State themselves was another notable event of the year.
The politician said the year was also marked by elections and the election campaign, which was full of dirt. After this campaign, the people became more divided. When attempts were made to unite them around such a problem as corruption, the ‘media holding’ managed to impose cleavages – Romanian-Moldovan, East-West, etc. The state institutions were captured and do not work for the benefit of the people.
Igor Grosu noted that what the ruling parties do now is to tolerate each other, even if they are different – from the left to the right - and such a state is dictated by the wish to survive because a particular format was voted in 2014, but in 2015 the conjuncture was fully different.
According to him, the year was also marked by regrettable things, such as the results of the presidential elections, and the fact that particular media outlets were used to manipulate and divide. The state institutions and media outlets were captured and are coordinated by one command center.
The politician believes 2017 will be a surprise one and the new President will be only a décor. There will be thus one more discredited institution. The President will be enclosed in a ‘cave’ as particular powers were already withdrawn from him.
The public debate “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years” was the 67th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN in concert with Radio Moldova and with the assistance of Germany’s Hanns Seidel Foundation.
