Policies for the people, not politics are needed in the local public administration, especially in the case of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC), executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy Igor Botan stated in the public debate “Dissolution of majority coalition on the Chisinau Municipal Council: reasons and consequences at local and national levels” that was organized by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.
Igor Botan, who is the standing expert of IPN’s project, said the dissolution of the majority alliance formed on the CMC is a negative thing that is perceived as such by the people. The old practices when the councilors quarrel and then vote in a package for particular decisions with pecuniary significance for those involved can continue to exist in the Council.
The expert noted that the existence of a coalition on the CMC is a positive and useful thing, including for the mayor general of Chisinau. There is now no alliance on the Council because of the current context in Chisinau, which is a negative one for Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, who held office for nine years.
Igor Botan considers that all the residents of Chisinau are aware that corruption flourishes at the City Hall, while the searches carried out by officers of the National Anticorruption Center on February 22 represent a sign that things can no longer be tolerated.
According to the expert, there are a number of problems in Chisinau that represent a real curse for the city. He referred to the large number of kiosks, the illegal constructions and the advertising billboards in Chisinau. Igor Botan considers that the political problems are harmful to the city and it would be useful to the residents for the local problems to be solved by the joint effort of the mayor and the municipal councilors.
He noted that if there is now no pro-Liberal alliance on the CMC, this does not mean that there is a coalition against the Liberals.
The public debate entitled “Dissolution of majority coalition on the Chisinau Municipal Council: reasons and consequences at local and national levels” is the 51st installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are held with the support of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
