Ombudsman Mihail Cotorobai urges the state authorities and the representatives of protesters who demonstrate in the center of Chisinau to ensure the exercise of the freedom of assembly in a peaceful way, excluding any violence. In a press release, the ombudsman says the peaceful expression of the viewpoint on particular subjects and events with a social impact as part of demonstrations is a proof of the maturity of a democratic society, IPN reports.
The ombudsman calls on the members and sympathizers of the parties and public movements that protest to exercise the right to assembly in a peaceful way, as it is provided in the Constitution and international treaties to which Moldova is a party. He calls upon the persons involved in these events and their opponents to show respect and tolerance of any person, regardless of their political beliefs.
Mihail Cotorobai noted a particular demonstration can dissatisfy other persons hostile to the ideas and demands of the organizers of this demonstration. He urges decision makers to monitor the situation so as to prevent the placement of barriers to the access to information by blocking online broadcasts from the events by media outlets and calls on the representatives of the media to be correct and objectives when covering the events, while the protesters not to allow the use of violence against journalists.
The ombudsman said he will monitor the developments downtown and underlined that any actions, inaction or violations of the right to assembly can be communicated on 060002641 or through the email address secretariat@ombudsman.md.
