Prime Minister Pavel Filip requested the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment to hasten the designing of the project documentation for cleaning the Byk River. For this project, the Government of Romania will allocate €10 million, IPN reports, quoting the Government’s press service.
“Owing to the current state of the Byk, the road becomes impassable and gardens are flooded when it rains heavier. The problem has persisted in Chisinau and in Strășeni for many years. The people in the region say this is their key problem,” stated the Premier.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, the specification for purchases related to the works that will be performed as part of the project is being worked out. “We should do our homework and then get money for projects. Start the procurement process for the environmental impact and project documentation,” said Pavel Filip.
Under the project, the Byk riverbed will be cleaned on a distance of 21 km in Strășeni district and of 24 km in Chisinau municipality. The draft decision on the allocation of money is close to receiving the final approval of the Romanian government.
Of the €100 million provided by Romania in non-reimbursable assistance, €15 million is intended for environmental projects. The Byk River will be cleaned at a cost of €10 million, while the rest of the money will be used to restore the ecosystems in the meadow of the Lower Prut, to prevent the pollution of groundwater and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
