Case of measles confirmed in Chișinău municipality

A nine-year-old child from Stăuceni commune of Chișinău municipality became infected with measles. The case was confirmed last week, acting head of the General Social Assistance Division Carolina Olaru informed in the September 10 meeting of officials of municipal services and divisions, IPN reports.

The child wasn’t vaccinated against measles. This imported the disease from the Russian Federation. Carolina Olar noted four suspect cases of measles in the municipality of Chișinău are now being examined.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, 281 cases of measles have been confirmed so far this year. The yellow code advisory for spread of measles is still valid. Ceadâr-Lunga, Vulcănești, Ungheni, Taraclia, Cahul, Cantemir, Ocnița, Nisporeni, Hâncești and Chișinău remain the most affected districts.

Measles spreads very swiftly in unvaccinated communities. A sick child can infect up to 18 children. The symptoms of the disease include fever and eruptions accompanied by cough, rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis. The consequences of measles are very serious and can even lead to death.
