Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers that in a democratic state, the will of the people, expressed by popular vote and reflected in the configuration of Parliament, is the only one that can ensure a legitimate process based on dialog. This is stated in a press release issued to comment on the formation of a governing coalition and a new Government by the Moldovan Parliament, elected democratically on February 24.
“Romania is expressing its full availability to further advance the Strategic Partnership for Moldova’s European Integration, which is at the core of our bilateral relationship, provided that Moldova strictly adheres to this Strategic Partnership and continues to firmly and consistently pursue its European course, including by implementing the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, and the reforms needed for getting closer to the EU”, reads the press release.
It’s also important for Romania, says the press release, that Moldova makes a clear commitment to continue implementing cooperation projects endorsed by Romania and in particular the strategic Romania-Moldova interconnection projects.
“At the same time, Romania considers of major importance that Moldova maintains its position on the Transnistrian settlement process that respects the territorial integrity of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders and that doesn’t affect its pro-European vector. Romania underlines the importance of consolidating the shared linguistic, cultural and historical heritage that is at the basis of our special relationship with Moldova”, says the Romanian MFA.
The press release concludes by urging relevant actors to show calm and self-restraint and ensure a peaceful and inclusive transition of power to put an end to the crisis.
