President Igor Dodon admitted he could propose a representative of the largest parliamentary group, of the Party of Socialists, or a candidate from the presidential team for the post of Prime Minister, but avoided giving names, arguing it is yet premature, IPN reports.

“If a parliamentary majority is not formed and the Constitutional Court says the President has the right to field a candidate for premiership without a parliamentary majority, I will consult all the parliamentary groups and will take a decision,” President Dodon told the press. Asked by journalists if it’s true that incumbent minister of finance Ion Chicu could be suggested for Prime Minister, Igor Dodon said no one except the President can propose a candidate.

The President’s Office at the start of last week formally asked the Constitutional Court to clarify whether the Head of State can nominate a candidate for Prime Minister considering that Parliament still doesn’t have a leadership. Presidential aide Maxim Lebedinschi noted then that under the Constitution, the failure to appoint a Prime Minister and a Cabinet in three months leads to the dissolution of Parliament. Also, there must be at least two nominations within a span of 45 days before Parliament can be dissolved.
