The referendum is a direct democratic method of consulting citizens on important national issues and there is now no restriction as to the holding of a referendum on the day of the parliamentary elections, stated Democratic MP Sergiu Sîrbu.

“Personally, I consider we will not have restrictions on the holding of the referendum on the election day. The law bans holding plebiscites 60 days before and 60 days after the general elections and on the day of another national referendum. The law does not provide that we cannot hold a referendum on the election day. A technical explanation is probably needed here in the law, but this is a purely legal aspect,” the MP said in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel.

According to him, the PDM hasn’t yet taken a definitive decision as to the holding of the referendum. This is a variant and it would be interesting to find out the people’s opinion on the issue. The organizers should be very attentive as there are particular risks. “A failed referendum on the issue could bring less benefits,” stated Sergiu Sîrbu.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Valeriu Giletski said the initiative to enshrine “the European integration” in the Constitution was also aimed at unifying the pro-European forces in Parliament. Both of the pro-European camps in the legislative body should leave the angers and dissatisfaction aside and should think about the future they want to build. “The goal was to transmit a message. It was a test to see if we are devoted to this message. If we had decided and introduced the “the European integration” in the Constitution, this would have helped us more, especially because we are in an election campaign and we would have told the people that this is the correct path for Moldova’s development,” stated Valeriu Giletski.

Representatives of opposition parliamentary parties said earlier that the holding of a referendum on the European course as a country development model on the day of the parliamentary elections set for February 24, 2019 is banned by the law.
