Parties about decision to vote on “European integration” in Constitution or not

MPs of the PSRM, PLDM and PL explained their decisions not to support the PDM’s bill concerning the enshrining of “the European integration” in the Constitution. They said the European integration should be done, not only declared and the current government does not actually implement the provisions of the Association Agreement with the EU. For its part, the PDM said the amendment of the Constitution would have confirmed the fact that Moldova does not intend to change its strategic development direction. The opinions were stated in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

Liberal-Democratic MP Iurie Țap said the European integration idea should be delimited from the bill proposed by the Democrats. After four years of the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU, Moldova is captured by oligarchic powers, according to a report by the European Parliament. As the provisions of this agreement are not respected by the current power, the constitutional amendment proposal is cynical.

Socialist MP Adrian Lebedinski said the PSRM never assumed responsibility for supporting the European integration course. “We consider particular good things from the EU should be transposed to the Republic of Moldova. We speak about the living standards, justice, not about everything as what is good for the Europeans is not always good for the Moldovans,” he noted, describing the bill as populist and aimed at imposing a provision from the Democratic Party’s statutes on all the parliamentary parties.

Liberal MP Ion Apostol said the actions around the amendment of the Constitution represent the start of the election campaign for the PDM and are designed to improve the current government’s image after this violated the Constitution and stole the US$ 1 billion.

The spokesman for the PDM Vitalie Gamurari noted the amendment of the Constitution would have been a confirmation of the fact that Moldova does not intend to change its strategic development direction. “No one can fully guarantee as the normative framework, including the Constitution, can any time be modified, but the given context is also a very clear signal for the foreign partners that the Republic of Moldova will remain a reliable partner in the promotion of the European values and wants to become part of the big European family,” stated Vitalie Gamurari.

The vote for the Democratic Party’s initiative to amend the Constitution and enshrine the European integration in it failed. The initiative garnered only 54 votes in favor and wasn’t thus adopted. A constitutional amendment proposal is carried by the votes of 67 MPs.
