Political situation in Moldova gives reasons for concern, German official

The political situation in the Republic of Moldova gives reasons for concern. The annulment of the results of the Chisinau mayoral elections is very problematic, Minister of State for Europe at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs Michael Roth stated in a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova Tudor Ulianovschi, who is in Germany on a visit.

According to the Embassy of Germany, in the meeting Michael Roth said the voters’ will must necessarily be respected, the rule of law and the free elections being supreme values. Only when these things are guaranteed, Germany and the EU can constructively continue the close cooperation, supporting the reforms needed in this regard in the Republic of Moldova.

Germany expects that the parliamentary elections that will be held in Moldova at the start of 2019 will be free and fair and will involve foreign observers. As to the recently adopted law on fiscal amnesty, Michael Roth said the Government of Moldova should take the preoccupations of the international partners and civil society seriously and should fully engage in the fight against corruption and building of the rule of law.

The two also discussed the Transnistrian conflict. Michael Roth welcomed the recent progress made in the negotiations and the meeting in the 5+2 format that was held in Rome on May 29, which was a successful one. The official voiced hope that more concrete results will be achieved and this will have a positive impact on the life of the citizens from the region.
