Igor Dodon: Plans to politically settle Transnistrian conflict cannot be discussed now

At the current stage, we cannot speak about plans to politically settle the Transnistrian conflict. The Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselski has never accepted such discussions, President Igor Dodon was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Forth power” produced by N4 TV channel.

“My firm position is that Transnistria forms part of the Republic of Moldova and does not have a future without it and the political resolution of this conflict is one of the national priorities of the President. The Presidential Office has its own position on the issue, but this does not refer to the federalization of the state,” said President Dodon.

He noted the removal of the checkpoints set up on the Nistru should be the next step in relation to the Transnistrian region. This is one of the subjects that will be discussed in the meeting of Igor Dodon and Vadim Krasnoselski scheduled for September 6.

According to President Dodon, the dialogue is the only way that can lead to the country’s reunification. The political solution should be worked out by Chisinau and everyone should have a common position, but this does not exist at the moment. “I hope we will adopt such a position after the parliamentary elections. This common position should be presented publicity to Tiraspol. We should discuss and negotiate in the 5+2 format and the international community could support us,” he stated. “We could be very close to settling the Transnistrian conflict after the parliamentary elections.”
