The behavior of the TV channels in the election campaign is better than in the pre-electoral period. However, Prime, Publika, Canal 2 and Canal 3 are an exception as they continue to be openly politically biased in favor of an election runner, shows the second monitoring report for the period between May 11 and 14 that was presented by experts of the Association “WatchDog.MD” Community.
In a news conference at IPN, expert Valeriu Pasa said there were monitored the news bulletins broadcast in prime time at the most popular national TV channels. It was established that most of the electoral competitors that staged electoral events were mainly covered. The ratio of negative news to positive news shows three election runners were either favored or disfavored most of all. These are the candidate of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase, the Party of Socialists’ candidate Ion Ceban and independent candidate Silvia Radu.
According to Valeriu Pasa, the number of positive news articles about Ion Ceban is larger than of negative news articles. This appears in a favorable light mainly on NTV. Silvia Radu is evidently favored by the TV channels that form part of the General Media Group: Prime, Publika, Canal 2 and Canal 3. The situation of Andrei Nastase is different as the same channels present him mainly in a negative light.
Most of the news items broadcast by the TV channels of the General Media Group about Silvia Radu were manipulating in character. By their content they cultivated a particular electoral option in voters. Even if these channels declared they will not cover the campaign prior to the local elections, they every day cover the campaign and favor Silvia Radu.
“WatchDog.MD” expert Irina Sterpu said there were delimited three types of behavior of TV channels in the period. The channels of the General Media Group and NTV were evidently biased. RTR was partially politically biased in favor of Silvia Radu and Reghina Apostolva. Jurnal TV, Moldova 1, TV8 and Pro TV were neutral.
The “WatchDog.MD” experts notified the Broadcasting Coordination Council so that this penalizes the TV channels that broke the law.
