The negotiations on the formation of a government coalition are held in a non-transparent way and are not open to the general public. This is a new crime against the people because the lack of transparency compromises democracy, Marin Livadaru, chairman of the Progressive Society, said in the public debate “How appropriate the behavior of the real and potential participants in the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition is in the current situation in Moldova: extra-parliamentary views”, held by IPN News Agency in partnership with Radio Moldova.
Marin Livadaru noted that the lack of transparency is the key element of the noxious culture of political dialogue. “A democratic and open society implies full transparency. The rulers should not hold discussions behind closed doors, especially because secret agreements were signed earlier. This means that they do not discuss reforms there. There is no transparency. We continue to maintain this noxious culture of alliance formation. The lack of transparency is a crime. We should not allow them to hold meetings behind closed doors. They come and tell us their conclusions only. Today we have a political minority of about 2,000 people who represent these parties, at the central and local levels. They are accomplices to the stealing of public money and have a tacit alliance. We became hostages and slaves because we didn’t penalize them,” said the politician.
Marin Livadaru also said that the extraparliamentary parties are part of civil society, but only the parties are ready to assume responsibility for governance. “We have many ideas, but do not have chances to promote them. In a captive state, an extraparliamentary party has no chance to put forward ideas. If the ideas are against the corrupt government, these could be promoted. I have faced this problem since I returned home from abroad five years ago,” he stated.
The politician added that he wants the confidence in the political class to be restored, but this should go through a lustration process. “We should propose the parties to go through self-lustration under the supervision of civil society. Those that will show that they made the money honestly can be forgiven. But most of them are so corrupt that they will not accept this lustration. They must be penalized strictly and their property should be nationalized,” said Livadaru.
The public debate “How appropriate the behavior of the real and potential participants in the negotiations on the formation of a government coalition is in the current situation in Moldova: extra-parliamentary views” is the 45th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are supported by the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
