Nicolae Negru: Government and opposition must unite society

The parties of the government coalition and the opposition must find points of common interest in order to unite the divided society. Political analyst Nicolae Negru considers that the modernization of the country and ensuring of people’s welfare can be common points for all the political forces. The analyst stated his viewpoints in the public debate “Priorities of the political class and Moldovan society in an electoral year. Position of the parliamentary parties” that was staged by IPN Agency.

“The replies between the government and the opposition show that the power and the opposition struggle for things that are not connected with strategies and priorities. From my viewpoint, a party should base its priorities on fundamental state and social interests. Not always the offers of a party can be accepted by the whole society. A party must be able to communicate with society and convince the people that what they offer is in the interests of the state. The rating does not necessarily reflect the correctness of the taken decisions. It may go down owing to painful decisions aimed at bringing benefits in the future,” said the expert.

Nicolae Negru also said that initially the Communist Party (PCRM) pursued the European integration goal. The consensus between the government and the opposition led to the unanimous voting of a relevant statement in 2005. “Afterward, the PCRM made a turn and society divided into two camps. We have a problem here. The objectives must be made known, while a party must inspire. The European integration objective was affected as in certain historical moments the ruling parties weren’t lucid and disciplined enough,” he stated.

According to Nicolae Negru, the PCRM now speaks about the country’s modernization, while earlier spoke about its Europeanization. “There are certain modernization models. I think that a contact point between all the parties on the political arena can be found here. The ensuring of welfare is also a common point. But in our country they do not discuss, but rather struggle. There will be no national unity without discussions,” said the expert.

The debate “Priorities of the political class and Moldovan society in an electoral year. Position of the parliamentary parties” is the 27th of the series of debates “Development of political culture by public debates”. IPN Agency has staged these debates for the third year, with the support of the German foundation Hanns Seidel and in cooperation with Radio Moldova.
